A lot of people including ourselves have ask this questions whether we can transfer WhatsApp chats over to different platforms or numbers? From what we know currently you can only back up and restore from the same platform say if you’re using Android you can only transfer to Android. Same goes to iOS, and you can only restoring from the same number. If you change your number, you won’t be able to transfer your old chat histories.
WhatsApp is testing the the feature on iOS and Android.
The long awaited feature is finally coming soon. WhatsApp is finally working on a feature that will offer cross platform transfer and different number transfer, as reported by WAbetainfo. Although it is still under development, the team says that the feature will be available in a future update, and both iOS and Android versions of the app will be supported.
Can this new feature transfer WhatsApp chat history cross platform?
It is said that this feature fixes the “issue” where a user couldn’t restore the chat history after buying a device that’s not on the same operating system. For example, restoring your chat history from iCloud on WhatsApp for Android, and WhatsApp for iOS cannot restore the backup from Google Drive. WhatsApp is now working on a solution to migrate the chat history. Above is a screenshot where it’s possible to migrate the chat history from WhatsApp for iOS to WhatsApp for Android, but the opposite is possible too. In the last weeks, WhatsApp was also working to bring several improvements to this feature. Such as the possibility to transfer the chat history to a different phone number!
What to expect from the update?
As per the screenshot above, it explains several things:
- You won’t be able to migrate your chat history at any time: you could start this process only when you link a new Android phone to your WhatsApp account.
- Media will be also migrated to the Android device: you will find your chat history fully migrated, as well as media.
- You can transfer your chat history to a different phone number: this is very useful when you are changing device and phone number, so the process to change your phone number will be automatically launched before starting to migrate your chat history.
Please be noted that this feature is under development on WhatsApp for Android and iOS, and it will be available in a future update and no release date is available. So stay tuned to discover the new features!
