The first time Apple introduce water-resistant product was iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus back in 2016. And every iPhone released since has also been water-resistant. However, many people thought that water-resistant is the same as waterproof. No it’s not. Unlike water proof, water-resistant can still be damaged by heavy or frequent water exposure.
But Apple watch should be water proof right?
No it’s not water proof. Apple Watch is also water resistant, but not waterproof. For example, Apple Watch Series 1 and Apple Watch (1st generation) are splash and water resistant, but submerging is not recommended. However, Apple Watch Series 2 and latest can be used for shallow water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean. But shouldn’t be used for activities involving high velocity water or submersion below shallow depth like scuba diving, water skiing etc.
You can also showering with Apple Watch Series 2 and above, but best is not exposing it to shampoos, soap, conditioner and lotion as they can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes.
How much water-resistance is my iPhone?
For iPhone 12 series it can stand maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes. iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max can withstand maximum depth of 4 meters up to 30 minutes. For iPhone 11 and iPhone XS/XS Max it can withstand maximum depth of 2 meters up to 30 minutes. Last but not least, for all other iPhone from since iPhone 7 it can only stand a maximum depth of 1 meter up to 30 minutes.
What to do if my iPhone fall into water?
If your iPhone had liquid other than water splashes on it, all you need to do is to just rinse the affected area with tap water. If you dropped it into water like pool or river. You need to dry your iPhone as soon as possible. Tap it gently against your hand with charging connector facing down to remove excess liquid. Then, leave it in a dry area with some airflow blowing directly to charging connecter.
For Apple Watch, normally when it got wet. The speaker might sounds muffled. Don’t insert anything into the openings (speaker or microphone port) and don’t shake the watch to remove water. Allowing your Apple Watch to charge overnight might speed up evaporation. You can also manually clear the water by swipe up on the bottom of the watch face to open Control Center, tap Water Lock, then turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen and clear water from the speaker.
Is Apple water resistant permanent?
Like any water resistant product. Apple water resistant is not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. For your information, liquid damage is not covered under warranty, but you might have rights under consumer law.
