Screen glass replacement is a complicated process, approach it with caution.
A phone’s screen glass is one of the most important parts of a smartphone device, besides the function it completes the aesthetic of any smartphone. Nowadays where everyone is holding a smartphone, it’s very common to come across someone with a shattered phone screen glass. We’re pretty sure that anyone with that is very unsatisfied and is always looking to replace it at an affordable price.
Well, good news, in this blog post we will break down how to replace any screen glass by yourself at home!
The procedure of replacing one’s smartphone screen glass is as follows:
- Open up the smartphone
- Remove the screen/display
- Replace the adhesive
- Fit the new display in
- Make sure everything’s in line
STEP 1: Open up the smartphone
To start, remove the rear cover, battery and see where the screws might be located. Look under the labels and beside charging ports. You might find screws in the battery cavity if you have a device with a removable cell. Pry the phone apart using the levers and guitar pick, there will be additional screws for you to remove. Be wary of the ribbon cables as you need to carefully and gently remove them from their connectors. Use something flat or a guitar pick for this particular task. Ribbon cables are very fragile and easily broken, take care as damage to these could change the dynamic of the repair by a considerable amount.
STEP 2: Remove the screen/display
At this point, you will have the front of the phone in your hand, with the glass display ready to be removed. Grab a heat gun or alternatively, you can use a hairdryer at a low setting to loosen the adhesive. Usually the process of removing the display and the body isn’t difficult. Start by pushing through the camera hole against the glass. Slowly and carefully pull the glass display away from the phone.
STEP 3: Replace the adhesive
This process will be the easiest but doesn’t mean you don’t have to be careful. Note that narrow rolls of adhesive can be bought online but if you have some laying around you can just cut them up to save some trouble of waiting. Grab the adhesive that you have laying around your house then cut it into 1 mm strips. After that, apply the adhesive along the frame of the smartphone rather than the screen glass.
STEP 4: Fit the new display in
Once you have put the adhesive strips in place, remove the plastic protective strips on the adhesive and push the new screen glass into place. Make sure that you only apply the slightest amount of pressure to the display where it meets the adhesive as any additional pressure would result in the breaking even with the toughest of screen glasses.
STEP 5: Make sure everything’s in line
Now that the new screen glass is installed, it’s time to put the phone back together. Reconnect every relevant cable, putting them back where it’s necessary. After that, place all the components like screws, battery, etc. back in place and make sure there are no parts lying around. Lastly, test out the phone to ensure it works.
The Bottom Line
Replacing parts or fixing any smartphone is a very difficult process. It requires patience, experiences and skills to pull off, because one small mistake might damage your smartphone and that might worsen your problems, that is why we always advise you to seek for a professional to get the job done.
