Mark your Calendars. SPR (GE15) will be held on 19 November according to the Election Commission (EC).
SPR, GENERAL ELECTION 15 — Here is a general rundown on things that you need to know before voting.
REGISTRATION STATUS
With the SPR closing in day by day and the Government mobilising their plan to lower the voting age to 18 years old, it is a great time to reassure your SPR registration status especially if you are a first-time voter at the upcoming SPR.
Fortunately, we don’t need to be physically at the Election Commission’s office to check up on our voting status as a website is able to do that, named MySPR Semak.
Once you are at the MySPR homepage:
- Click on Semakan Daftar Pemilih
- Enter your MyKad number along with the captcha code
- It will show all the important information on the next page
Alternatively, if you do not have access to computers, there is also the MySPR Semak mobile app present that is available both for Android and IOS devices. The app works in a similar fashion to its website so you can put your worries to rest.
CHANGING VOTING LOCATION & ELECTORAL DIVISION
If you wish to change the location of voting or the electoral division, you need an SPR account. To register:
- Search up on Google, myspr.
- Once you are at their website simply click on Permohonan Akaun Baru to create a fresh new account.
- Enter in all the important information on the page.
- Take and upload a picture of your MyKad and another one as a selfie with your MyKad for verification purposes.
- Check your email inbox for the TAC number provided by SPR and activate your account.
- After logging into your account, you will be able to update your address if the registered address is different from your current residence by filling in Form A.
Note that you will be unable to alter your voting location in time for GE15. On the other hand, you may update your address on the list of voters at your nearest post offices or at the Election Commision (EC) offices. Do remember to update the address on your MyKad and provide proof of domicile when doing so.
LOCATION TO CAST YOUR VOTE
There are multiple polling centres around the country, you can check on MySPRSemak for specific location information and other detailed information.
ELECTION DAY, STEPS TO VOTE
Considering that the general election is only held every few years and also the larger number of people voting due to the minimum age being lowered to 18, here’s a quick rundown on how it is going to be like on polling day:
- You are required to line up for a ballot box at your polling station
- The election ushers will check your name off the list, hand you a ballot and ink your finger for proof of participation
- To vote for your candidate, simply mark it with an X in the box next to your preferred candidate
- Place your ballot into the box
With all things considered, researching about the candidates before you decide who to vote for is recommended as it will provide you with a clearer and more comprehensive perception on that particular candidate that you wish to vote for.
