The iPhone SE has long been a fan favorite as a cost-effective way to get into the Apple ecosystem. It’s been a long time since the last one, which was published in 2020. This year, a new SE phone was rumored to be released, but with the same design. Now we have even more information regarding what Apple has in store for us in the near future.
The upcoming iPhone SE will be called iPhone SE+ 5G, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young. This will be the first SE phone to support 5G, although the name is a bit odd. Apple doesn’t normally use the term “5G” in its product titles, but that might change in 2022.
Despite having the same screen, another aspect of the name puzzles me: the + symbol. A ‘Plus’ usually denotes a larger smartphone, for as the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 8 Plus. This iPhone SE+ may provide the impression of a larger iPhone SE, which might be deceptive. According to what we know about the iPhone SE+, the plus symbol simply denotes an improvement, the same as how the ‘S’ in the iPhone 6S did. When it comes to naming standards, the M1 Pro and M1 Max names were a little perplexing for some individuals.
The Design
The design of this phone will be extremely similar to the 2020 iteration of the SE. It will feature the same design as the iPhone X, with the same 4.7-inch LCD and Touch ID home button, but with new internals including the A15 Bionic CPU and 5G connectivity. According to the same source, a new iPhone SE generation with a bigger OLED 5.7-inch display would be released in 2023 or 2024.
The SE+ 5G and a fifth-generation Apple iPad Air have been confirmed by another source, a Russian EEC (Eurasian Economic Commission) authority. The A15 Bionic chip, as well as a 12MP ultrawide front camera with Center Stage support and a 5G version, will be included in the 2022 iPad Air. The current iPad Air is expected to have stiff OLED panels, whereas the 2023 iPad Air may have flexible OLED panels. Apple has used flexible OLED in their iPhones since 2017. Therefore, it would be interesting to see it in the iPad Air so that the bezels might be even slimmer. This would also be the first time Apple uses an OLED display in a product larger than an iPhone.
This year’s iPhone SE+ 5G and iPad Air are releasing in the spring. The prices of these gadgets are unclear, however, an iPhone SE costs between RM1,999 and RM2,199, while an iPad Air costs between RM2,599 and RM 3,799.
