Nowadays, smartphones have become an indispensable tool for everyone. It is a good communication tool when working or studying and a good entertainment tool when it is leisure. However, if you always use a smartphone to work, study, or for entertainment, it may cause certain damage even eye diseases such as myopia or glaucoma. Therefore, you should pay more attention to how to protect your eyes, if you often play with mobile phones. Here are some easy and quick ways to let your eyes have a break during all those mobile phone marathon sessions.
1. Blink Often your Eyes
You tend to blink a bit less when you’re watching on a mobile phone or tablet. It may cause your eyes to become dry and irritated. Remember to blink often to keep your eyes moist and reduce dryness and irritation. You’re recommended to blink more than 10 times every 15 minutes to keep your eyes wet. Blinking often helps you to refocus your eyes too.
2. Follow the 20-20-20 Rules to Protect your Eyes
The 20-20-20 rule means taking a break every 20 minutes, looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This makes sure your eyes are relaxed and get enough breaks, without missing out on much. Even better to get up and take a 10 – 15 minutes break like walking around or doing some other activities. Although it can seem like an inconvenience to take a break, it’s essential for your eye health as well as your overall health.
3. Adjust Screen Brightness to protect your eyes
Most of us have a habit of playing on mobile phones while lying in bed. At the moment, try to lower your phone screen brightness to avoid eye fatigue caused by the contrast between the screen brightness and the dark environment. In addition, when playing with the mobile phone at night, you cannot use the mobile phone screen to directly face your eyes. It is recommended to tilt down at a 45-degree angle and not tilt up. Otherwise, the neck will feel sore due to excessive force. It is best to keep your phone and eyes in 30 – 50cm distance.
4. Keep a Proper Distance to protect your eyes
Most people hold their smartphones only about 8 inches from their faces. Nevertheless, holding your phone that close can be very harmful to your eyes. Try to hold your phone at least 16 – 18 inches away in order to protect your eyes from long hours of mobile phone use.
5. Use Night Mode to protect your eyes
When you are using your smartphone, set your phone to night mode and it’s recommended to choose a cool color for the screen. It is because the brighter the color, the more harsh people’s eyes will be and it is easy to feel fatigued which may increase the chance of ophthalmic diseases such as myopia. Nowadays, smartphones have night mode features that can automatically reduce strain on your eyes at night. This feature will let your phone automatically adjust the screen setting depending on the time of the day.
6. Minimize Screen Glare to protect your eyes
It’s necessary to do what you can to minimize the screen glare your eyes are exposed to. If your smartphone doesn’t come with an anti-glare screen. However, an anti-glare Corning Gorilla Glass or matte screen protector film can be used too.
7. Keep a Clean Screen to protect your eyes
A clean screen lets you have clear visibility and reduced strain on the eyes. Routinely wipe your mobile phone screen with a dry cleaning cloth to clear distracting dust, smudges, grime, and fingerprints. Remember to use a dry cleaning cloth, don’t use a wet cleaning cloth to wipe it!
